Using this Bawang Dayak (Dayak Onion) as the natural colouring to dye my red eggs instead of artificial food colouring. It does look like onions / shallots but it doesn't have any onion taste at all.
If you realised, artificial colouring will stained your fingers when you peel the egg shells. But this natural colouring won't leave any stains on your fingers.
It might take a longer time or process as compared to artificial colouring dyes. Therefore will need to slowly boil the eggs for a longer time period.
Cut up bawang dayak into rings or smaller pieces. Boil together with eggs under low heat (to prevent having cracked egg shells).
Boil until you can see the egg shells absorbing the natural red color. Timing depends whether you are boiling a big pot of eggs or just a few eggs in a small pot. Just check the colouring will determine the readiness.
Once done, scoop up the eggs & let it cool down.
Happy Cooking..
