Aloe vera definitely has some unique therapeutic properties, especially when applied as an ointment for the skin. It is very effective in healing of burns, cuts, abrasions, wounds, sunburns and insect bites. Remove the green skin of leaves and apply the transparent gel directly onto affected parts. Apply directly on dry skins, it gives you the necessary moisture that your skin needs.
This is my pot of Aloe Vera planted in my garden. And it has a lot small baby aloe growing as well. Kinda easy to plant, not much attention needed. It just need a place where it can get direct hot sun. Water once a week is more than sufficient.
Aloe Vera is good for oral consumptions too. These are the benefits:
- High in Vitamins & Minerals
- High in Amino Acids & Fatty Acids
- Helps with Digestion
- Helps in Detoxification
- Boost the Immune System
- Great for the Skin
Although Aloe has many health benefits, but probably not a food to consume regularly.
Tip: Avoid taking aloe internally during pregnancy, menstruation, if you have hemorrhoids or degeneration of the liver and gall bladder.
Another use is to make a simple & tasty sweet soup dessert (tong sui). Here's the Aloe Vera with Dried Longan, Snow Fungus & Gingko Nuts Dessert.
Ingredients: (serves 2-3)
1pc Aloe Vera (medium size about 100g -weigh after skin removed)
25pcs Gingko Nuts - shell & skin removed
25g Dried Longan
8pcs Red Dates (seed removed)
1 pc Honey Dates
3g White Snow Fungus
800ml Water
30g Rock Sugar
Step by Step:
1. Bring water to boil.
2. Soak snow fungus until soft. Tear into small pieces.
3. Once water is boiling, add in gingko nuts, dried longan & honey dates. Boil for 10 mins with lid covered.
4. Remove skin of aloe vera using a vegetable peeler to peel the sides thorny part first. The yellow slimy juice just below the skin of the leaves are toxic. It can cause stomach cramp, purging or skin irritation. It is best to keep out of reach of young children and pets. The part of the leaves that are edible is the transparent gel.
Then, peel the aloe by opening up the skin. and only add in the clear inner gel of the aloe
plant
Only the clear inner gel of the Aloe plant is edible.
Carefully, use a tablespoon the spoon out the clear inner gel.
inally, the whole piece of the inner gel is separated from the skin. You can feel the slimy gel from the aloe. Just rinse under running tap water to remove some of the slime & any yellow gel (if any). You won't be able to completely wash off the slimy gel but it's ok.
Now, cut them into small cubes or bite sizes.
See the slimy gel.. It's good for your skin. Apply them on your face your supple smooth skin. Don't worry of the slimy gel in the soup. Just put everything to boil. The slime will dissappear once cooked.
5. Add in aloe vera into the soup & cook for another 5 mins with lid covered.
6. Then, add in snow fungus & cook for another 10 mins with lid covered.
7. Add rock sugar to taste & boil for another 5 mins till rock sugar dissolved with lid covered.
